Greenwich Village Little League Team Takes on Italian Travel Baseball Team In Historic All-Star Match Up
Villagers to play the Italian Dream Friday, June 22 at JJ Walker Park at 6pm
Greenwich Village Little League (GVLL) has announced plans to host the Italian Dream, a team of Italian All-Stars from northern Italy, on Friday, June 22 at 6:00pm. The GVLL team, The Villagers, will provide the Italian Dream with its first test as the Italian boys compete in a tournament series with additional stops in Bostonand Philadelphia.
Friday’s game will be a historic moment for both teams — the first tournament for the new Italian travel baseball program, “Baseball on the Road” and the first time GVLL has ever hosted a foreign all-star team.
The game will be played at JJ Walker Field, the hallowed home of GVLL, located at the corner of Hudson and Clarkson streets in the heart of NYC’s Greenwich Village. . GVLL President John Economou will officially welcome the Italian Dream to New York and throw out the first pitch.
The Villagers, coached by Roger Ehrenberg, Carlo Saldana, Greg Epstein and Gary Ginsberg, is comprised of 14 all-stars selected from the five teams that make up the League’s Majors A division.
Greenwich Village Little League (GVLL) was founded in 1984 by local parents to enable their children to play organized Little League baseball. Last year, more than 800 girls and boys, ages 5-12, played on 60 teams.
The Italian Dream is a group of 15 youth players from northern Italy along with 5 coaches. Five players played for the Italian team in last year’s Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA.
All are welcome to attend and cheer on these young all-stars as they compete for bragging rights in the inaugural year of Baseball on the Road.
