Dear GVLL and Pier 40 Families,

You may have heard of discussions about possible redevelopment of Pier 40. Will it include residential development, a soccer stadium, or something else. We think the most important thing is that it make our park a better place to play and our community a better place to live.

But the park is in a financial crisis. Without a change of course, the fields we love may be lost. On May 31st, the Hudson River Park Trust will present ideas for changing the Hudson River Park Act. We hope you will attend. We’ll send another email with more information soon. The meeting will be on Thursday, May 31st, at 7 PM, at St. Paul’s Chapel, 209 Broadway, between Fulton and Vestry Streets. Public Meeting Notice 5-31-12

Our 2012 Girls Summer Camps are available for enrollment at pier40.org.

If you sign up before April 15th the fee for each week is just $250, a big savings over the regular fee of $375. After April 15th, the fee will go up.

We’re doing this to encourage families to get involved in something new and to develop this exciting and important new program at Pier 40. Many boys think about baseball all winter long. Many have been to our camps before or have friends who come each year. When we announce our popular baseball camps, they start filling up right away. But we know that most girls have not been spending March dreaming of the clutch hit and diving catches and sliding in to home for the winning run. It can be hard to decide to do something new.

We need you to help get our girls softball program started, so sign up now and save! What if you change your mind? This year, all Girls Softball enrollment fees are fully refundable until the day camp begins.

Our girls softball camps are similar to our baseball camps, but with a separate group of coaches who are former and current college players. The camps are all about learning the skills by having a great time playing the game. We do spend some time teaching fundamentals, but we will play at least two high energy games each day. Coaches will do a lot of the pitching, so each player will get challenging pitches to hit, but will also be assured of putting the ball into play frequently, with almost no strike outs and walks. That means lots of base running and lots of chances for making plays in the field; lots of fun and excitement in the dug-out and on the field; and lots of learning all aspects of the game. It means no one sits and watches and everyone is important to the team and gets to play the game in a friendly and competitive way.

Drop off at camp is between 8:30 and 9:00. Pick-up is between 3:30 and 5:00. Lunch, snack, and beverages are included. Each girl gets a camp tee shirt and visor.

Please forward this email to your friends, neighbors, and teammates.

For more information, please contact our head softball coach Renae Beauchman at 818-631-1726 or renaebeauchman@gmail.com

For boys, and for all children 6 and 7 years old, please sign up for Pier 40 Baseball camps here.

Pier 40 is starting a Girls Softball program to mirror their baseball program. Pier 40 will work with leagues, schools, and other groups to help build a full mix of quality softball programs in Manhattan.

Renae Beauchman, catcher and outfielder for four years at Long Island University, has joined our staff to lead this initiative. Please contact her if you would like to help in any way: to spread the word about upcoming programs, or even just to offer ideas or encouragement. Her email is renaebeauchman@gmail.com and her cell is (818) 631-1726.

Upcoming Softball Clinics:

On Sunday, March 18th, and Sunday, March 25th, we will offer two-hour clinics for girls, led by Renae and Keli Leong, a former shortstop at Columbia, with some top Division 1 college active players joining the coaching staff. At FOCUS ON OFFENSE clinics we will teach scoring strategies specific to softball including hitting, bunting, and base running. At FOCUS ON PITCHING & CATCHING, girls can choose either pitching or the catching position. Pitchers will cover both windmill mechanics and pitcher-specific defensive skills. Catchers will focus on mechanics and position responsibilities. Please go to pier40.org to learn more and enroll in these clinics.

Softball Summer Camps

Very soon, we will announce a full summer of week-long softball camps for girls, ages 8-13.

Please remember to help spread the word to friends and neighbors, and let Renae know if you would like a pdf to distribute or a flyer to post.
